O2 Sensor vs Air-Fuel Ratio Sensor

Modern vehicles use two types of exhaust sensors: traditional oxygen sensors and air-fuel ratio (A/F) sensors. They look similar but work differently and aren't interchangeable.

What to look for

  • Wiring — A/F sensors have 5–6 wires; traditional O2 sensors have 1–4 wires
  • Voltage output — O2 sensors switch 0.1–0.9V; A/F sensors output linear voltage around a 3.3V center
  • Position — A/F sensors are typically upstream (pre-catalyst); O2 sensors can be upstream or downstream
  • Vehicle application — most 2001+ vehicles use A/F sensors upstream with traditional O2 sensors downstream
